This week at the McSpedden Library, we are preparing for the STAAR test. Since April is Poetry Month, and there is poetry on the STAAR test, I thought I would offer a STAAR Special to our 3rd grade teachers.
The teachers brought in their students in and we examined and analyzed a poem called “Fishing for Compliments” by Colin McNaughton from the book Wish You Were Here (And I Wasn’t): A Book of Poems and Pictures for Globe Trotters..
Our students and I read the poem together and then discussed what we thought the poem was about. Then we answered 4 STAAR style questions about the poem. I put the questions in the below Google Presentation.
We used cards from the Plickers App for the students to respond with what they think the answer to the questions are. This is a really cool app that works with the website. I entered the questions on the website, then the kids held up their plickers cards to give their individual answers. I then showed the kids the graph how many answered all the answer choices. It really helped them understand the answer choices.
